The five best day trips from Tunis by taxi in 2026
Tunis is a great base for day trips. Here are the five we recommend most often, with travel times and what to plan around.

If you are spending several days in Tunis, day trips will multiply what you see of Tunisia. The road network is good, distances are short, and a private taxi for the day costs a fraction of what it does in most European destinations. Here are five trips we plan most often.
1. Carthage and Sidi Bou Said (half-day)
The classic. Forty minutes door to door, you cover one of the great Mediterranean archaeological sites in the morning and the country's most photogenic village in the afternoon. Combine with lunch at La Marsa for the perfect rounded day.
2. Dougga (full day)
The best-preserved Roman city in north Africa, two hours west of Tunis. The site sits on a hilltop above wheat fields. Bring water, a hat and a packed lunch, there is little shade and no restaurant on site. Plan to leave Tunis by 8:30 to avoid the midday heat.
3. Hammamet old town and Yasmine marina (full day)
Combine the small whitewashed medina of old Hammamet with lunch on the beach and an afternoon stroll along the Yasmine marina. About 70 minutes south of Tunis by motorway.
4. Kairouan (full day)
Tunisia's spiritual capital and the fourth city of Islam, two hours south of Tunis. The Great Mosque of Sidi Oqba, the Aghlabid basins and the medina with its carpet artisans are all walkable in a single day.
5. Cap Bon coastal loop (full day)
A scenic loop up the eastern peninsula: Korbous and its hot springs, El Haouaria with its caves and falconry tradition, then down the coast to Kelibia for fresh fish and the Spanish fortress.
Booking tips
- Book the day before; same-day full-day bookings get harder in summer.
- Confirm the price is for the day, with waiting time included.
- Tip for any stops longer than two hours.
- Tell the driver your priorities so the schedule is realistic.
- Bring cash for site entry fees, many sites do not yet take cards.
Distance is not the obstacle to seeing Tunisia, the road is good. The obstacle is choice. These five trips solve that for most first-time visitors.
