Cap Bon: Tunisia's coastal peninsula, a 2026 traveller's guide
The Cap Bon peninsula packs hot springs, Roman caves, vineyards and quiet beaches into a single coastal loop.

Cap Bon is the peninsula that points from northern Tunisia toward Sicily, separating the Gulf of Tunis from the Gulf of Hammamet. For travellers, it is the country's most varied day of driving: hot springs, ancient quarries, sleepy fishing harbours, vineyards and quiet sand beaches, all within a 200-kilometre loop.
Korbous and the hot springs
Halfway up the western coast, Korbous is one of the few places on the Mediterranean where natural thermal water flows directly into the sea. Stop at Aïn Atrous, on a switchback road carved into the cliff, where steam rises from the rocks at the waterline. The thermal station above the village is a relaxed half-hour break.
El Haouaria and the Roman quarries
At the northern tip of the peninsula, El Haouaria is famous for its falconry tradition (a festival is held every June) and for the Roman quarries of Ghar el Kebir, vast underground halls cut into the cliff to supply Carthage with stone for its monuments. Bring a torch.
Kelibia and the Spanish fortress
Coming back down the eastern coast, Kelibia is a working fishing town with one of Tunisia's best fortresses crowning the harbour. The seafood is excellent, the Mansourah beach south of town is one of the cleanest on the peninsula, and the local muscat wine is worth a glass at lunch.
What to see and where
- Aïn Atrous and the Korbous thermal cliff.
- El Haouaria and the Ghar el Kebir caves.
- Kelibia, the Spanish fortress and Mansourah beach.
- The wineries of Grombalia and Mornag for tastings.
- Nabeul ceramics and the Friday market on the way home.
How to plan it
Cap Bon is best as a full-day private drive from Tunis or Hammamet. Allow 9 hours door to door, including stops. The road is in good condition but winds; if anyone in the group is car-sick, sit them in the front. Bring swimwear, you will want at least one stop in the sea.
Most visitors fly into Tunisia for the south. Cap Bon is the day that reminds you the north is just as worth your time.
